What is coaching?

Coaching is a developmental process designed to increase performance and improve working relationships essential to business results. It is increasingly seen as a critical skill for leaders and managers to use as part of developing the performance of their people. Sometimes an individual may additionally need the skills, objectivity, independence and capacity offered by an external executive coach.

The results of coaching can include better decisions, clearer goals and roles, increased self-awareness, increased self-confidence, changes in behaviour, increased business focus, and an increased range of ideas and options for differing circumstances.

Executive coaching

Executive coaching is a significant investment, and the return on that investment is likely to be greatest when it is used:

  • To support significant work transitions: e.g.  a significant increase in the complexity of the role.
  • To improve performance at work.
  • To support longer term development/career planning.
  • To help process feedback.
  • To provide support in a specific area, e.g. a project.

My Style

I normally begin a coaching process and each individual session by contracting for outcomes to be achieved and topics to be addressed.

I am facilitative and supportive, like most coaches, but I am also willing to be confronting and directive when it is necessary.

When possible and appropriate I like to use 360 degree feedback to supplement the one to one dialogue of the coaching sessions.

I use a variety of personal change (e.g. gap, incremental and transitions) and coaching models (e.g. GROW) and I have a number of models and tools for common developmental issues.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

I am qualified user of the MBTI personality inventory and I often use it as part of coaching, for two reasons:

  • It provides invaluable personal insight which helps the client understand the underlying reasons for their own behaviour and for situations which they find difficult.
  • It helps me as a coach to tailor my style and interventions and therefore increase the likelihood that they will be found helpful. Each type generally likes to be coached in a different way.
